“Hey, you were in my optics class last semester,” Kaveh says with false nonchalance.The boy glances up from his book and regards him for a moment. “Kshahrewar,” he states, then starts reading again.Kaveh chuckles. “Er, yes. My name is Kaveh, actually.”He doesn’t react.“You’re Alhaitham, right?”An affirmative grunt.“Are you doing okay over here? I noticed a bunch of Haravatat juniors over there giggling, and I didn’t … well, I thought that they shouldn’t …”Alhaitham finally closes the book, but he keeps his finger in it to mark his spot. “You were the one who was always arguing with the professor,” he says, peering up owlishly.“Ah! Umm, no, I don’t think so. At least, not always. Maybe once or twice.”“You’re the reason we didn’t have time to get to Chapter 20. That whole chapter was on the final. I heard a lot of people failed.”Kaveh shifts uncomfortably from foot to foot. “You can’t blame me for that. I didn’t choose to test over material we’d never done in class.”“I don’t care. I thought it was easy.”“Excuse me?”The final had been easy. Optics wasn’t one of the more difficult classes a Kshahrewar student could take, but … his friend Jazari had failed. Had it truly been Kaveh’s fault? The class was only offered once a year, which meant Jazari’s graduation would likely be delayed, which meant—“You’re excused,” Alhaitham says.
